Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationJñāniviśārada (ज्ञानिविशारद) refers to a “one who is wise and clever” and is used to describe Śiva, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.3.13 (“Śiva-Pārvatī dialogue”).—Accordingly, as Pārvatī said to Śiva: “O Yogin, O lord, wise and clever [i.e., jñāniviśārada], please listen to the reply to what you, as an ascetic, said to the lord of mountains. O Śiva, you perform this great penance because you possess the energy of penance. Your intellect is inclined to perform penance because you are a noble soul. That energy is the Prakṛti, the cause of all activities. Everything is created, sustained and destroyed by it”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
