Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationJñānisattama (ज्ञानिसत्तम) refers to the “most excellent of wise men” and is used to describe Vasiṣṭha, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.3.35 (“The story of Padmā and Pippalāda”).—Accordingly, after Vasiṣṭha spoke to Himavat mount (Himācala): “After saying this, the excellent sage Vasiṣṭha, most excellent of wise men (jñānisattama), stopped after remembering lord Śiva, the creator of divine sports of diverse varieties”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
