九會曼陀羅創起 [jiu hui man tuo luo chuang qi]—The origin of the Nine Assemblies Mandala (九會曼陀羅 [jiu hui man tuo luo]) — [Legend] It is not clear from the sutras who depicted the sequence of the Nine Assemblies (九會 [jiu hui]). Some say that when Nagarjuna Bodhisattva (龍猛菩薩 [long meng pu sa]) opened the Southern Iron Tower (南天鐵塔 [nan tian tie ta]), the venerated figures of the Nine Assemblies appeared in the sky. Others say that Vajrabodhi Tripitaka (金剛智三藏 [jin gang zhi san cang]) received it from Longzhi (龍智 [long zhi]). Some say Amoghavajra (不空 [bu kong]) created it. Others say that Subhakarasimha (善無畏 [shan wu wei]) and the Garbhakosa Mandala (胎曼 [tai man]) were both perceived from the sky. Thus, there is no definitive explanation. See Notes on the Vajradhatu Mandala, Volume 1 (金剛界曼陀羅大鈔一 [jin gang jie man tuo luo da chao yi]), Notes on the Secret Treasury Record, Volume 2 (秘藏記鈔二 [mi cang ji chao er]), etc.
