鏡聽 [jìng tīng] [jing ting]—
Ancient people (古人 [gu ren]) at the year's beginning (歲首 [sui shou]) and year's end (歲末 [sui mo]) would divine good or bad fortune (卜吉凶 [bo ji xiong]). They would clean and sweep, placing incense and lamps (香燈 [xiang deng]) at the stove door (灶門 [zao men]). They would fill a pot (鐺 [dang]) with water, place a ladle (杓 [biao]) in the water, and after worshipping and praying, stir the ladle to make it spin. Following the direction the handle pointed, they would go out holding a mirror (鏡 [jing]), secretly listening to people's words. The first sentence heard would be the diviner's omen. This divination technique (卜術 [bo shu]) is called "Jingting".
