井臼 [jǐng jiù] [jing jiu]—
Drawing water, pounding rice, and similar tasks. Generally refers to household chores. For example: "操 [cao]" (cāo jǐngjiù) means to manage household chores. From Liaozhai Zhiyi (聊齋志異 [liao zhai zhi yi]), Volume 2, "Hongyu" (紅玉 [hong yu]): "Within a few years, the old woman and her daughter-in-law successively passed away, and she had to manage the (jǐngjiù) herself." From Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢 [hong lou meng]), Chapter 4: "It would be enough for her to recognize a few characters and remember the deeds of some virtuous women from previous dynasties; however, they only considered spinning, weaving, and (jǐngjiù) as essential."

井臼:汲水、舂米等事。泛指家務。如:「操井臼」。《聊齋志異.卷二.紅玉》:「數年間,媼與子婦又相繼逝,井臼自操之。」《紅樓夢》第四回:「使他認得幾個字,記得前朝幾個賢女事蹟便罷了,卻只以紡績井臼為要。」
