焦循 [jiāo xún] [jiao xun]—
(1763–1820 CE (西元 [xi yuan])). His courtesy name (字 [zi]) was Litang (理堂 [li tang]). A native of Ganquan (甘泉 [gan quan]), Jiangsu (江蘇 [jiang su]) (present-day (今 [jin]) Jiangdu County (江都縣 [jiang dou xian])) during the Qing Dynasty (清 [qing]). He was a classical scholar (經學家 [jing xue jia]) and mathematician (算學家 [suan xue jia]), and authored (著有 [zhe you]) over twenty works (經說 [jing shuo]) on classics, including Mengzi Zhengyi (孟子正義 [meng zi zheng yi]), as well as mathematical treatises (算書 [suan shu]) such as Tianyuan Yishi (天元一釋 [tian yuan yi shi]) and Kaifang Tongshi (開方通釋 [kai fang tong shi]).

教訓 [jiào xùn] [jiao xun]—
1. To teach and admonish (教導訓戒 [jiao dao xun jie]). From The Scholars (儒林外史 [ru lin wai shi]), Chapter 31: "Recently, thanks to the young master's (少爺 [shao ye]) instruction, I finally understood that books should be read." From A Brief History of Civilization (文明小史 [wen ming xiao shi]), Chapter 22: "Old master's (老夫子 [lao fu zi]) teaching is absolutely correct, I (兄弟 [xiong di]) was biased (偏見 [pian jian])."
2. Knowledge (認識 [ren shi]) gained from the experience (經驗 [jing yan]) of failure (失敗 [shi bai]) or mistakes (錯誤 [cuo wu]). For example: "You should firmly remember this lesson so that you won't make the same mistake next time."

教訓:1.教導訓戒。《儒林外史》第三一回:「近來蒙少爺的教訓,纔曉得書是該念的。」《文明小史》第二二回:「老夫子教訓得極是,兄弟偏見了。」

徼巡 [jiǎo xún] [jiao xun]—
To patrol; to inspect. From Liu Zongyuan's (柳宗元 [liu zong yuan]) "Ancient East Gate Song" (古東門行 [gu dong men xing]) of the Tang Dynasty (唐朝 [tang chao]): "Red pellets (赤丸 [chi wan]) speak at night with flying lightning flashes, while the patrolling Sili (司隸 [si li]) sleeps like sheep."

From Book of Han (漢書 [han shu]), Volume 65, Biography of Dongfang Shuo (東方朔傳 [dong fang shuo chuan]): "The Chancellor (丞相 [cheng xiang]) and Imperial Censor (御史 [yu shi]) understood the instruction (知指 [zhi zhi]), and then dispatched the Right Assistant Commandant (右輔都尉 [you fu dou wei]) to patrol east of Changyang (長楊 [zhang yang]), and the Right Chief Administrator (右內史 [you nei shi]) to mobilize the common people (小民 [xiao min]) to jointly await at the meeting place (會所 [hui suo])."
From New Book of Tang (新唐書 [xin tang shu]), Volume 136, Biography of Li Guangbi (李光弼傳 [li guang bi chuan]): "When Emperor Dezong (德宗 [de zong]) went to Fengtian (奉天 [feng tian]), [Li Guangbi] was promoted to General of the Left Guard (左衛將軍 [zuo wei jiang jun]) and served as Commissioner for City Defense (防城使 [fang cheng shi]).
