【Legend has it】The second volume of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra (智度論 [zhi du lun]) says: After the Buddha (佛 [fu]) entered parinirvana (入滅 [ru mie]), Mahākāśyapa (摩訶迦葉 [mo he jia ye]) wished to compile the Tripitaka (三藏 [san cang]). He deliberated, saying, "Who can compile the Vinaya Pitaka (毘尼法藏 [pi ni fa cang])?" Elder Aniruddha (長老阿泥盧豆 [zhang lao a ni lu dou]) said, "Śāriputra (舍利弗 [she li fu]) has an excellent disciple named Kauṇḍinya, who knows the Vinaya Pitaka. He is currently residing in the Śirīṣa tree garden (尸利沙樹園 [shi li sha shu yuan]) in the heavens. An envoy can be sent to invite him." So Kāśyapa (迦葉 [jia ye]) sent a junior monk (下座比丘 [xia zuo bi qiu]) to summon Kauṇḍinya. The monk arrived in the heavens and conveyed Kāśyapa's message. Kauṇḍinya said to the monk, "Did the Buddha enter parinirvana on the day you summoned me?" The monk replied, "Indeed, as you say: the Great Master, the Buddha (大師佛 [da shi fu]), has already entered parinirvana." Kauṇḍinya said, "The Buddha entered parinirvana so swiftly! The eye of the world (世間眼 [shi jian yan]) has vanished. My Upādhyāya (和上 [he shang]) Śāriputra, who was able to follow the Buddha in turning the Dharma wheel (轉法輪 [zhuan fa lun]), where is he now?" The reply was, "He entered nirvana first." Kauṇḍinya said, "The Great Master and the Dharma generals (法將 [fa jiang]) have all departed separately. What shall we do? Where is Mahāmaudgalyāyana (摩訶目犍連 [mo he mu jian lian]) now?" The monk replied, "He too has entered parinirvana." Kauṇḍinya said, "The Buddha's Dharma (佛法 [fu fa]) is about to scatter, and the great ones (大人 [da ren]) have passed away. Sentient beings (眾生 [zhong sheng]) are pitiable. (omission in the middle) I have lost my desire-free Great Master (離欲大師 [li yu da shi]). What purpose is there for me to remain in this Śirīṣa tree garden? My Upādhyāya and the Great Master have all entered parinirvana. I can no longer descend to Jambudvīpa (閻浮提 [yan fu ti]). I shall remain here and enter nirvana." Having spoken these words, he entered meditation (禪定 [chan ding]), soared into the void (虛空 [xu kong]), emitted brilliant light (光明 [guang ming]) from his body, and also produced water and fire (水火 [shui huo]). He touched the sun and moon (日月 [ri yue]) with his hands, displaying various miraculous transformations (神變 [shen bian]). From his own heart, fire emerged to burn his body, and water emerged from his body, flowing down in four streams, reaching Mahākāśyapa's location. A voice from the water recited this verse (偈 [ji]): "Kauṇḍinya bows in homage (稽首禮 [ji shou li]) to the assembly, the foremost great virtuous monk (大德僧 [da de seng]). Hearing the Buddha entered parinirvana, I too shall depart, like a young elephant following a great elephant." This verse is called the "Water-Spoken Verse" (水說偈 [shui shuo ji]) (one version mistakenly has four verses).

憍梵波提入水定涅槃—【傳說】智度論二曰:「佛既入滅,摩訶迦葉欲結集三藏,議言誰能結集毘尼法藏者?長老阿泥盧豆言:舍利弗有好弟子,名憍梵波提,能知毘尼法藏。今在天上尸(註)利沙樹園中住,可遣使請來。迦葉便遣下座比丘,召憍梵波提。比丘至天上,傳迦葉意。憍梵波提語比丘言:召我日佛滅度耶?比丘言實如所言:大師佛已滅度。憍梵波提言:佛滅度大疾,世間眼滅,能逐佛轉法輪,將我和上舍利弗,今在何所?答曰:先入涅槃。憍梵波提言大師法將,各自別離,當奈何?摩訶目犍連今在何處?比丘言是亦滅度。憍梵波提言佛法欲散,大人過去,眾生可憐。(中略)我失離欲大師,於是尸利沙樹園中住,亦何所為?我和上大師,皆已滅度,我今不能復下閻浮提,住此入涅槃。說是言已,入禪定中,踴在虛空,身放光明,又出水火,手摩日月,現種種神變。自心出火燒身,身中出水,四道流下,至大迦葉所。水中有聲,說此偈言:憍梵波提稽首禮,妙眾第一大德僧。聞佛滅度我隨去,如大象去象子隨。」此偈名水說偈(一本有四偈誤)。
