1. To see ghosts and gods (鬼神 [gui shen]). Describes seeing absurd and incredible things. From Stories to Enlighten the World (喻世明言 [yu shi ming yan]), Volume 10, "Magistrate Teng's Supernatural Judgment of Property" (滕大尹鬼斷家私 [teng da yin gui duan jia si]): "Everyone saw his 'seeing ghosts and gods' demeanor, dared not step forward, and all stood watching dumbfounded from both sides." From Second Collection of Stories to Strike the Table in Amazement (二刻拍案驚奇 [er ke pai an jing qi]), Volume 2: "This young man is a smooth talker; it's simply that his natural inclination is towards this genre, and he's also deeply immersed in it, so the more he creates, the more elevated it becomes, fully exploring the subtle mysteries. Then he fabricates fantastic talk (天話 [tian hua]) about 'seeing ghosts and gods' to deceive the ignorant."
