Four principles for selecting a Chinese brush (毛笔 [mao bi]):
尖 [jian] (Jian - Pointed) means the brush tip (笔锋 [bi feng]) should be sharp (尖锐 [jian rui]).
齐 [qi] (Qi - Even) means when the brush tip (笔锋 [bi feng]) is spread out flat (拨开捺扁 [bo kai na bian]), the brush hairs (笔毛 [bi mao]) should be even (齐 [qi]) and without uneven lengths (参差长短 [can cha zhang duan]).
圆 [yuan] (Yuan - Round) means the entire brush head (笔头 [bi tou]) should be round and full (圆浑饱满 [yuan hun bao man]), without indentations or protrusions (凹凸 [ao tu]).
健 [jian] (Jian - Resilient) means the brush hairs (笔毛 [bi mao]) should have elasticity (弹性 [dan xing]).
