迦摩縷波 [jia mo lu bo]—Kāmarūpa—[Place name (地名 [de ming])] Kāmarūpa, a country (國名 [guo ming]). It is located in East India. Its circumference is over ten thousand li. The people are short in stature, and their language differs little from that of Central India. They worship heavenly gods and do not believe in the Buddhist dharma. From the time Buddhism emerged until the Tang dynasty, no monasteries (伽藍 [jia lan]) were established, nor were monks gathered. Only those with pure faith secretly recited the Buddha's name. King Kumāra, hearing that Xuanzang (玄奘 [xuan zang]) Tripitaka (三藏 [san cang]) was in Magadha (摩揭陀 [mo jie tuo]), frequently sent envoys to invite him. Tripitaka, persuaded by Master Śīlabhadra (戒賢論師 [jie xian lun shi]), went there and grandly praised the sacred virtues of the Son of Heaven of the Great Tang (大唐天子 [da tang tian zi]). He returned with the king and met at King Hārṣa's (戒日王 [jie ri wang]) Grand Almsgiving Assembly (無遮會 [wu zhe hui]). See Records of the Western Regions (西域記 [xi yu ji]), Chapter 10. The Tang Shu (唐書 [tang shu]), Geography Monograph (地理志 [de li zhi]), writes it as Kāmapa. It is now the western part of Assam, India.
