祭文 [ji wen]—A Eulogy — [Miscellaneous Term] (雜語 [za yu]). Also known as a Fasting Text (齋文 [zhai wen]). It is a text recited (誦讀 [song du]) for the purpose of offering food (齋供 [zhai gong]) to the spirits of the deceased (冥眾 [ming zhong]) and mourning (弔祭 [diao ji]) the departed (亡者 [wang zhe]).

From the "Biography of Li Nan" (李南傳 [li nan chuan]) in "Treatises on Esoteric Arts, Part One" (方術傳上 [fang shu chuan shang]), Volume 82 (卷八二 [juan ba er]) of the "Book of the Later Han" (後漢書 [hou han shu]): "At dawn there was a favorable wind, and tomorrow at noon, there should be an auspicious inquiry. Therefore, I came to offer congratulations." (旦有善風 [dan you shan feng],明日中時 [ming ri zhong shi],應有 [ying you],故來稱慶 [gu lai cheng qing]。)

吉問:佳音、好消息。《後漢書.卷八二.方術傳上.李南傳》:「旦有善風,明日中時,應有吉問,故來稱慶。」

記問 [jì wèn] [ji wen]—
To memorize and recite (記誦 [ji song]) books one has read, in preparation for answering difficult questions (問難 [wen nan]) or challenges. From "Book of Rites: Record of Learning" (《禮記 [li ji].學記 [xue ji]》): "Learning that relies on memorization and answering questions (之學 [zhi xue]) is not sufficient to be a teacher for others (不足以為人師 [bu zu yi wei ren shi]); one must also understand and comprehend (必也其聽語乎 [bi ye qi ting yu hu])." Song Dynasty (宋 [song]) scholar Ouyang Xiu (歐陽修 [ou yang xiu]) wrote in his "Epitaph for Cai Junshan" (〈蔡君山墓誌銘 [cai jun shan mu zhi ming]〉): "Scholars (學者 [xue zhe]) who regard memorization and answering questions (應對 [ying dui]) as their primary task (為事 [wei shi]) do not align with the ancient (古 [gu]) intention of selecting officials (取士 [qu shi])."
