jhaṭaka (झटक).—f (Imit.) A smart and rapid going and returning; a shake, a jiffey, a whisk. v māra.

jhaṭakā (झटका).—m jhaṭakārā m (Imit. formations from jhaṭa!) A smart blow as with a stick or switch. 2 A sudden and smart pull: also a Jerk with hand or foot. 3 A sudden and smart pain, a shooting, throe, pang, twinge. 4 A puff, gust, blast (of wind): a bursting forth (of rage): a blow or blast (from a bhūta or fiend): a flinging out (of the foot in dancing): a swing (of the arm or body): the sweep or sway (of a weapon): a whisk from a skirt or an end. v māra, dē, basa. 5 A shake or a flap; a flap with the sūpa or sifting fan &c. v . 6 A concussion or sudden blow (as from a body struck against); a knock or hit (as in falling. v lāga. 7 A stroke of the sun; or, less specially, a blast of ūnha or sun-heated air: the sweep or prevalence, or an alighting stroke, of jarīmarī or other epidemic: an attack of fever, bilious disorder &c.: a blight falling upon crops: a blow (loss) in trade or business. v lāga, basa, māra N.B. jhaṭakārā is, throughout the above senses, less common than jhaṭakā. jhaṭakyāpaṭakyānta In a shake or trice; in half a moment. jhaṭakyāsarasā With a smart slash, cut, or stroke; with a jerk, catch, or pull; with a sweep or swing; with a whisk or shake; with a sally, start, spring, bound, dart, rush, run, go; with any outburst or sudden and forceful action: also as with a pop; all of a sudden--dropping down dead.
