Jatuyantra (जतुयन्त्र).—loc. °tre, lit. lac-machine, name of some art, in a list of those in which the Bodhisattva excelled; so read in Lalitavistara 156.22, for Lefm. jala-yantre; mss. vary, A (the best) cited as janu- (read jatu-)y°; Calcutta (see LV.) jatu°, con- firmed by Tibetan rgya skyegs kyi ḥkhrul ḥkhor, machine of lac. The precise meaning is obscure to me; in corresponding lists of arts I have found nothing similar, unless jantunā Mahāvastu i.129.9 (in a corrupt and obscure line, included in a passage of similar tenor) conceals jatunā, instr. of jatu.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
