蝗蟲 [huáng chóng] [huang chong]—
1. Animal name. An insect of the order Orthoptera (直翅目 [zhi chi mu]). Distributed in tropical and temperate regions, especially abundant in temperate grasslands. There are numerous species, approximately five thousand. Most are green or brown, their bodies divided into three parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. The head has a pair of compound eyes, three ocelli, a pair of antennae, and chewing mouthparts. The first segment of the abdomen has auditory organs on both sides. According to their living habits, they can be divided into two types: solitary and gregarious. When swarms of flying locusts (飞蝗 [fei huang]) migrate collectively, they often obscure the sky and sun, and extensively devour crops. Anciently called "fùzhōng" (阜螽 [fu zhong]). Also called "zhàměng" (蚱蜢 [zha meng]).
2. A metaphor for a person with an extremely large appetite. For example: "He's truly like a terrifying locust (蝗虫 [huang chong]), he completely devoured all the food in the refrigerator!"
