華座觀 [hua zuo guan]—Flower Pedestal Contemplation – [Term] One of the Sixteen Contemplations (十六觀 [shi liu guan]) described in the Contemplation Sutra. It is the contemplation of the form of Amitābha Buddha's (阿彌陀佛 [a mi tuo fu]) flower pedestal. The Contemplation Sutra (觀無量壽經 [guan wu liang shou jing]) says: "The Buddha told Vaidehi (韋提希 [wei ti xi]), 'Those who wish to contemplate that Buddha should give rise to the thought. Envision a lotus flower on the ground made of seven treasures, making each leaf of that lotus flower appear in a hundred precious colors. (Omission) The smaller flower leaves are three hundred fifty yojanas (由旬 [you xun]) in length and width, and such lotus flowers have eighty-four thousand leaves. (Omission) The Sakya-vilengka gem (釋迦毘楞伽寶 [shi jia pi leng jia bao]) forms its pedestal.'"
