花賊 [huā zéi] [hua zei]—
"Flower thief" (偷 [tou]) refers to butterflies (蝴蝶 [hu die]). From Song Dynasty (宋 [song]) scholar Tao Gu's (陶穀 [tao gu]) "Qingyi Lu" (清異錄 [qing yi lu]), Volume 3, "Chapter on Myriad Insects" (百蟲門 [bai chong men]): "Flower Thief": Wen Tingyun (溫庭筠 [wen ting yun]) once came up with a line, saying: 'Honey Official Golden-Winged Envoy' (蜜官金翼使 [mi guan jin yi shi]). He shared it widely among his acquaintances (知識 [zhi shi]), but no one could provide a matching line (可屬 [ke shu]). After a long time (久之 [jiu zhi]), he himself added the line below it, saying: 'Flower Thief Jade-Waisted Slave' (玉腰奴 [yu yao nu]). I (予以 [yu yi]) therefore said (謂道 [wei dao]) that it referred to butterflies (舚蜨 [tian die]).
huā zéi: tōu huā zéi, zhǐ hú dié. sòng. táo gǔ < qīng yì lù. juǎn sān. bǎi chóng mén>: “huā zéi: wēn tíng yún cháng dé yī jù yún: ‘mì guān jīn yì shǐ’ , biàn yú zhī shí, wú rén kě shǔ. jiǔ zhī, zì lián qí xià yuē: ‘huā zéi yù yāo nú’ , yǔ yǐ wèi dào tiàn dié.”
hua zei: tou hua zei, zhi hu die. song. tao gu < qing yi lu. juan san. bai chong men>: "hua zei: wen ting yun chang de yi ju yun: 'mi guan jin yi shi' , bian yu zhi shi, wu ren ke shu. jiu zhi, zi lian qi xia yue: 'hua zei yu yao nu' , yu yi wei dao tian die."
