鴻門宴 [hóng mén yàn] [hong men yan]—
During the Chu-Han Contention (楚漢相爭 [chu han xiang zheng]), Liu Bang (劉邦 [liu bang]) was the first to enter Xianyang (咸陽 [xian yang]). Xiang Yu (項羽 [xiang yu]), jealous of this, adopted Fan Zeng's (范增 [fan zeng]) stratagem and set up a banquet at Hong Gate (鴻門 [hong men]), intending to harm Liu Bang. Later, Liu Bang attended the banquet. Fan Zeng had Xiang Zhuang (項莊 [xiang zhuang]) perform a sword dance, looking for an opportunity to assassinate Liu Bang. Fortunately, with the assistance of Xiang Yu's uncle Xiang Bo (項伯 [xiang bo]) and Zhang Liang (張良 [zhang liang]), Liu Bang managed to escape the danger. This story originates from "Records of the Grand Historian (史記 [shi ji]), Volume 7, Basic Annals of Xiang Yu (項羽本紀 [xiang yu ben ji])".
Later, the term refers to an invitation to a banquet with malicious (不懷好意 [bu huai hao yi]) or ill intentions (居心不良 [ju xin bu liang]). For example: "He is a cunning person; I think you'd better not go to that Hongmen Banquet!" It is also known as "Hongmen Gathering (鴻門會 [hong men hui])" or "Hongmen Stratagem (鴻門計 [hong men ji])".
