哄動 [hōng dòng] [hong dong]—
To alarm or attract the attention of many people at the same time. From Chapter Seven of The Scholars (《儒林外史 [ru lin wai shi]》): "At this time, it caused a stir in Xuejiaji (薛家集 [xue jia ji]). Men and women from a hundred or so li away all came to see the funeral of Master Xun's (荀老爺 [xun lao ye]) family." Also written as "烘動 [hong dong]" or "轟動 [hong dong]".
哄動:同時驚動多數人或引起多數人的注意。《儒林外史》第七回:「此時哄動薛家集。百十里外的人,男男女女,都來看荀老爺家的喪事。」也作「烘動」、「轟動」。

From Chapter One of Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢 [hong lou meng]): "At that moment, it caused a stir among the neighbors (街坊眾人 [jie fang zhong ren]), who treated it as a piece of news (新聞 [xin wen]) to spread (傳說 [chuan shuo])." Also written as "哄動 [hong dong]" and "轟動 [hong dong]".

1. To be completely unified, to merge into one. From Huainanzi (淮南子 [huai nan zi]), "The Origin of the Dao" (原道 [yuan dao]): "Having no private interests and no public biases, extensively and widely fluctuating, it is vast and interconnected with Heaven and Earth (天地 [tian de])."
2. Appearing to be endlessly connected. From Selections of Literature (文選 [wen xuan]), Wang Bao's (王襃 [wang bao]) "Rhapsody on the Flute" (洞簫賦 [dong xiao fu]): "The wind (風 [feng]) is vast and continuous without ceasing, gently swaying and dancing."
鴻洞:1.大同、混同為一。《淮南子.原道》:「無所私而無所公,靡濫振蕩,與天地鴻洞。」
2.相連無涯的樣子。《文選.王襃.洞簫賦》:「風鴻洞而不絕兮,優嬈嬈以婆娑。」

Appearing hazy, boundless, pervasive, and endless.
Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]) poet Du Fu (杜甫 [du fu]), in his poem "Five Hundred Words Recalling My Feelings from the Capital to Fengxian County" (〈自京赴奉先縣詠懷五百字 [zi jing fu feng xian xian yong huai wu bai zi]〉), wrote: "The source of my worries is as vast as the Zhongnan Mountains (終南 [zhong nan]), boundless and unmanageable."
Song Dynasty (宋 [song]) poet Su Shi (蘇軾 [su shi]), in the second of his two poems titled "Two Views of Mount Lu" (〈廬山二勝 [lu shan er sheng]〉), wrote: "Amidst the hazy mists (空濛烟靄 [kong meng yan ai]), a vast and echoing sound of metal and stone (金石 [jin shi]) plays."
