hiṅgaṇēṃ vāphaṇēṃ (हिंगणें वाफणें).—v c (To season with assafœtida and to steam. Because assafœtida is first applied to the article in hand to be cooked, and shortly after arises the steam indicative of commencement and progress.) A popular phrase with neg. con. implying To be greatly behind hand in a matter to be done; to be as yet without having made even a beginning. Ex. khicaḍī ajhūna hiṅgalō nāhīṃ vāphalī nāhīṃ tū jēvāyālā basalāsa; ajhūna śēta hiṅgalēṃ nāhīṃ vāphalēṃ nāhīṃ itakyānta paṭṭī kāyamhaṇūna kēlī; rōjagārācā ṭhikāṇā nāhīṃ ajhūna hiṅgalā nāhīṃ vāphalā nāhīṃ. 2 Sometimes the formation, being considered as a reduplication of vāphaṇēṃ To steam (i. e. the steaming of the earth after the first showers), means simply To sow: and, by some, there being no standard for colloquialisms, it is understood as meaning To weed a crop; and, by others, To begin to recover from sickness; to begin to be convalescent.
