Heliopolis was one of the oldest cities of ancient Egypt, but nowaday it is mostly destroyed. It was the centre of sun worship to Re-Atum or Atum-Re, and the was originally known as 'Iunu'.

The god Atum was the cheif deity of Heliopolis and was worshipped in the temple Per-Aat ("Great House") and Per-Atum ("House of Atum").

The worshipping of the Ennead originated from this city.

Heliopolis was also known as:

Iunu ("Place of Pillars"),
"City of Helios",
"Eye of the sun".
