黑夜神 [hei ye shen]—God of Dark Night — [Divine Name] Kālarātri, also known as Black Night Deva (黑夜天 [hei ye tian]), Dark Night Deva (闇夜天 [an ye tian]), or Black Darkness Deva (黑闇天 [hei an tian]). Her Sanskrit name (梵名伽羅囉底嚜 [fan ming jia luo luo di me]) is Kālarātri.
She is one of the three consorts of King Yama (閻摩王 [yan mo wang]) and the deity who presides over the middle of the night.
Commentary on the Mahāvairocana Sūtra (大日經疏 [da ri jing shu]), Volume 10, states: "Next is the mantra (真言 [zhen yan]) of the God of Dark Night; this is the attendant consort of Yama."
Volume 14 also states: "With the left hand, grasp the Earth and Water fingers (地水指 [de shui zhi]) into the palm, extend the Fire and Wind fingers (火風 [huo feng]) side-by-side, and curl the Space finger (空指 [kong zhi]) into a normal fist (作拳 [zuo quan]). This is the mudra (印 [yin]) of Black Night Deva. She is the consort of King Yama."
Volume 16 also states: "King Yama in the south should create a Wind Mandala (風壇 [feng tan]). (text omitted) On the left side, depict the Queen of Black Darkness (黑闇后 [hei an hou]), with a banner (幢 [chuang]) as her emblem (印 [yin])."
Volume 17 also states: "It should be known that she is Black Night Deva, who is Yama."
Yan Mi Chao (演密鈔 [yan mi chao]), Volume 9, states: "The Sanskrit word Kāla (梵語迦羅 [fan yu jia luo]) is translated here as 'time' (時 [shi]), referring to the three times/periods (三時 [san shi]), etc. If interpreted according to the explanations in the common Mantra treasury sections, the complete Sanskrit pronunciation (具足梵音 [ju zu fan yin]) is Kālarātri (迦羅囉底嘿 [jia luo luo di hei]). Kāla (迦羅 [jia luo]) means 'black' (黑 [hei]), and rātri (囉底嘿 [luo di hei]) means 'night' (夜 [ye]), thus it is the God of Dark Night. Furthermore, tri (底哩 [di li]) means 'three' (三 [san]), referring to the three periods of night (夜三時 [ye san shi])."

(zhong lue) zuo bian hua hei an hou, yi chuang wei yin." tong shi qi yue: "dang zhi ji shi hei ye tian, ji shi yan luo." yan mi chao jiu yue: "fan yu jia luo, ci yi yun shi, ji san shi deng ye. ruo zhun pu tong zhen yan cang pin zhong shi zhe, ju zu fan yin yun jia luo luo di hei. jia luo yun hei, luo di hei yun ye, ji hei ye shen ye. you di li ming san, ji ye san shi ye."
