涸轍之鮒 [hé zhé zhī fù] [he zhe zhi fu]—
轍 [zhe] (chè) refers to the mark left by a 車輪 [che lun] (chēlún, wheel) rolling on the ground. 鮒 [fu] (fù) refers to a 鯽魚 [zei yu] (jìyú, crucian carp). A 鯽魚 [zei yu] (jìyú, crucian carp) in a 乾枯車轍 [gan ku che zhe] (gānkū chèzhé, dry rut) only needs a 斗升的水 [dou sheng de shui] (dǒushēng de shuǐ, small amount of water). If one delays by going far to the 西江 [xi jiang] (Xījiāng, West River) to fetch water, it would merely be 空口白話 [kong kou bai hua] (kōngkǒu báihuà, empty talk) and would not solve the problem. This idiom originates from "External Things" (外物 [wai wu], Wàiwù) in Zhuangzi (莊子 [zhuang zi]). Later, it became a metaphor for a person or thing trapped in a predicament and urgently needing rescue. In the Song Dynasty (宋 [song]), 蘇軾 [su shi] (Sū Shì) wrote in his "Memorial Requesting the Dredging of Hangzhou West Lake" (乞開杭州西湖狀 [qi kai hang zhou xi hu zhuang], Qǐ Kāi Hángzhōu Xīhú Zhuàng): "If it were to be blocked up one day, causing 蛟龍 [jiao long] (jiāolóng, dragons), 魚 [yu] (yú, fish), and 鱉 [bie] (biē, turtles) all to become like (héchè zhī fù, crucian carps in a dry rut), how could your humble servant bear to watch idly?" It is also referred to as 涸轍枯魚 [he zhe ku yu] (héchè kūyú, dried-up rut withered fish), 涸轍窮鱗 [he zhe qiong lin] (héchè qiónglín, dried-up rut impoverished scales), 涸轍窮魚 [he zhe qiong yu] (héchè qióngyú, dried-up rut impoverished fish), 涸轍之枯 [he zhe zhi ku] (héchè zhī kū, dried-up rut's withered [fish]), or 涸轍之魚 [he zhe zhi yu] (héchè zhī yú, dried-up rut's fish).
