和合僧 [he he seng]—Harmony Sangha — [Term] Sanskrit Saṃgha (僧伽 [seng jia]), also translated as Harmony (和合 [he he]). The term Harmony Sangha is a combination of Sanskrit and Chinese (梵汉双举 [fan han shuang ju]). When three or more Bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]) gather in the same place, observe the same precepts, and practice the same path, they are called a Harmony Sangha. See the entry on Sangha (僧 [seng]). If one uses means to cause their separation, it is called Breaking the Harmony Sangha (破 [po]), and is one of the Five Heinous Crimes (五逆罪 [wu ni zui]). Devadatta (提婆达多 [ti po da duo]) once committed this heinous crime during his lifetime. Harmony (和合 [he he]) has two meanings: Harmony in Principle (理和 [li he]) and Harmony in Action (事和 [shi he]).
