havāladāra (हवालदार).—m ( P) An officer of a district under the Soobidar, a Havildar. His business it was to make the collections of the Mahal, remit them to the Mamlatdar, and to inquire into petty complaints. 2 An officer attached to forts. His duty was to arrange and appoint the guards, patrols &c. 3 The chief of a company of armed men, peons, hircarrahs &c. The officers bearing this name are numerous, and have various departments and duties. 4 A non-commissioned officer in the Company's army, corresponding with Serjeant.
