海德 [hai de]—The eight virtues, or powers of the ocean, i.e. vastness, tidal regularity, throwing out of the dead, containing the seven kinds of pearls, absorption of all rivers, of all rain without increase, holding the most mighty fish, universal unvarying saltness.

海德 [hai de]—Virtues of the Sea — [Term] The Sutra of the Eight Virtues of the Sea (海八德經 [hai ba de jing]) lists eight virtues:
1. Boundless and vast.
2. The tides are never late.
3. It does not tolerate dead or decaying matter.
4. It contains seven treasures and pearls.
5. All five rivers flow into it, yet lose their original names.
6. Even when heavy rains pour into it, its volume neither increases nor decreases.
7. Its inhabitants (fish) have enormous bodies.
8. Its salty taste is uniform throughout, from edge to center.
The Nirvana Sutra (涅槃經 [nie pan jing]) Chapter 37 speaks of the sea's eight marvels. The Avatamsaka Sutra (華嚴經 [hua yan jing]) Chapter 42 lists the sea's ten virtues. Most major texts concur.
