Source: Project Gutenberg: Castes and Tribes of Southern India, Volume 11) Guvvala (“pigeon”) is one of the many exogamous septs (division) among the Bōyas (an old fighting caste of Southern India). The Bōyas were much prized as fighting men in the stirring times of the eighteenth century .
2) Guvvala (“doves”) refers to one of the exogamous septs (divisions) among the Mutrachas: a Telugu caste most numerous in the Kistna, Nellore, Cuddapah, and North Arcot districts. The Mutracha people were employed by the Vijayanagar kings to defend the frontiers of their dominions, and were honoured with the title of paligars.
