果蓏 [guǒ luǒ] [guo luo]—
Tree fruits (木實 [mu shi]) are called guǒ (果 [guo]), while herbaceous fruits (草實 [cao shi]) are called luǒ (蓏 [luo]). Later, guǒluǒ was used as a general term for melons and fruits (瓜果 [gua guo]). In the Shuogua (說卦 [shuo gua]) chapter of the I Ching (易經 [yi jing]): "Gen (艮 [gen]) represents mountains, paths (徑路 [jing lu]), small stones (小石 [xiao shi]), gate towers (門闕 [men que]), and fruits and melons." Kong Yingda (孔穎達 [kong ying da]) of the Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]), in his Zhengyi (正義 [zheng yi]) commentary, stated: "Tree fruits (木實 [mu shi]) are called guǒ (果 [guo]), while herbaceous fruits (草實 [cao shi]) are called luǒ (蓏 [luo])." In the Treatise on Food and Money, Part 1 (食貨志上 [shi huo zhi shang]) of Book of Han, Volume 24 (漢書 [han shu].卷二四 [juan er si]): "Vegetables (菜茹 [cai ru]) are grown in plots (有畦 [you qi]), and there are gourds (瓜瓠 [gua hu]) and fruits and melons."
