Guṇamukhyā (गुणमुख्या) or Gaṇamukhya refers to the “chiefs of tribes”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 17), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “If Venus should suffer defeat in his conjunction with Saturn, the chiefs of tribes (guṇamukhyā), soldiers, the Kṣatriyas and creatures of water will suffer; the several objects and persons presided over by Venus will also suffer in addition”.
