鬼緣 [gui yuan]—Ghostly Affinity — [Miscellaneous Term] The cause and condition (因緣 [yin yuan]) for evil ghosts (邪鬼 [xie gui]). The tenth fascicle, lower part, of Mohe Zhiguan (止觀 [zhi guan]) states: "If in a previous life, there was an external ghostly affinity, ghosts would then afflict them, leading to the development of ghostly dhyana (鬼禪 [gui chan]) and ghostly views (鬼見 [gui jian])."
鬼緣—【雜語】邪鬼之因緣。止觀十下曰:「若前世,外有鬼緣,鬼則加之,發鬼禪鬼見。」

歸元 [gui yuan]—(guī yuán) — [Terminology] Also called 歸真 [gui zhen] (guī zhēn), 歸寂 [gui ji] (guī jì), 歸化 [gui hua] (guī huà), or 歸本 [gui ben] (guī běn). It means to depart from the realm of birth and death and return to the true, tranquil, original source. It refers to the death of a person. It is synonymous with 圓寂 [yuan ji] (yuán jì). Zen practitioners (禪家 [chan jia], chán jiā) inscribe "新 [xin]" (newly returned to origin) or "新歸真 [xin gui zhen]" (newly returned to truth) on the memorial tablet (位牌 [wei pai], wèi pái) of the deceased, below which the Dharma name (法名 [fa ming], fǎ míng) is written. It commonly refers to the death of monks and nuns (僧侶 [seng lu], sēng lǚ).

規院 [guī yuàn] [gui yuan]—
A place for observing monastic rules (規戒 [gui jie]) and engaging in pure cultivation (清修 [qing xiu]), namely a Buddhist monastery (禪院 [chan yuan]). From Wang Wan's (王灣 [wang wan]) poem "In Harmony with Vice Censor He's Poem on the Forest Moon and Pure Drink" (奉和賀監林月清酌 [feng he he jian lin yue qing zhuo]) from the Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]): "Into the pure forest (淨林 [jing lin]) after the new clearing, a little coolness (小涼 [xiao liang]) permeates the monastic compound."

歸元 [guī yuán] [gui yuan]—
元 [yuan] (Yuán) means head (首 [shou]). (Guīyuán) is used as a metaphor for being beheaded (被殺了頭 [bei sha le tou]). From Chen Hong's (陳鴻 [chen hong]) 'The Tale of Everlasting Sorrow' (長恨傳 [zhang hen chuan]) from the Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]): "Next year, the great villain (大凶 [da xiong]) will be beheaded, and the imperial carriage (大駕 [da jia]) will return to the capital (還都 [hai dou])." It is also written as 歸寂 [gui ji] (guī jì).
歸元:元,首也。歸元用以比喻被殺了頭。唐.陳鴻《長恨傳》:「明年,大凶歸元,大駕還都。」也作「歸寂」。
