guḍhī (गुढी).—f A pole (wrapped around with a cloth, a mango sprig &c.); erected on the first day of the year before the house-door. v ubhāra. Ex. ālī dārā dēkhē haruṣācī guḍhī ||. 2 Flowers, rice-grains, pebbles, betelnut stuck on an idol when he is consulted. As these drop (conformably or otherwise with the terms stated by the inquirer), the direction sought is inferred. 3 Tidings from abroad of a death. 4 A bend or doubling back (as in rope under the operation of twisting; a curl, loop, snarl. v paḍa. 5 A crease or rumpled fold (in cloth). ujavī guḍhī dēṇēṃ To comply with or consent to (a petition &c.); and ḍāvī guḍhī dēṇēṃ To reject or refuse it. guḍhī ubhāraṇēṃ g. of s. or yaśācī To become famous; to acquire celebrity, esp. in bad sense.
