觀法 [guan fa]—(Guān fǎ) — [術語 [shu yu] (shùyǔ)] The method of contemplating truth in the mind. It is the same as 觀心 [guan xin] (guānxīn).
The 止觀 [zhi guan] (Zhǐguān) states: "Though contemplation of phenomena is correct, attachment in the mind (著心 [zhe xin] (zhuó xīn)) makes it akin to evil."
The 止觀大意 [zhi guan da yi] (Zhǐguān dàyì) states: "While 慧文 [hui wen] (Huìwén) merely listed inner contemplation of seeing and hearing, by the time of 南嶽 [nan yue] (Nányuè) and 天台 [tian tai] (Tiāntái), further due to the 法華三昧 [fa hua san mei] (Fǎhuá Sānmèi), 陀羅尼 [tuo luo ni] (tuóluóní) were developed, expanding the gate of meaning, and contemplation of phenomena became complete and comprehensive."
