掛號 [guà hào] [gua hao]—
1. To register a number for future reference. In Chapter 1 of Dream of the Red Chamber (《紅樓夢 [hong lou meng]》): "Recently, the Stone of Spiritual Understanding (神瑛侍者 [shen ying shi zhe]) felt a sudden urge to experience the mortal world (凡心偶熾 [fan xin ou chi]). Taking advantage of this prosperous and peaceful era (昌明太平朝世 [chang ming tai ping chao shi]), he desired to descend to the mortal realm (下凡 [xia fan]) to experience illusory karma (造歷幻緣 [zao li huan yuan]). He has already registered (掛了號 [gua le hao]) before the Desk of the Disenchantment Fairy (警幻仙子 [jing huan xian zi])."
2. When important letters and printed matter are mailed, the post office (郵局 [you ju]) registers them with a number and provides a receipt. If registered mail (郵件 [you jian]) is lost, the post office (郵局 [you ju]) is responsible for tracing it.

2. zhòng yào xìn jiàn hé yìn shuā pǐn fù yóu shí, yóu yóu jú dēng jì biān hào,, gěi shōu jù. guà hào yóu jiàn ruò yí shī, yóu yóu jú fù zé zhuī chá.

gua hao:1. bian hao deng ji, yi bei cha kao. < hong lou meng> di yi hui: "qia jin ri zhe shen ying shi zhe fan xin ou chi, cheng ci chang ming tai ping chao shi, yi yu xia fan, zao li huan yuan, yi zai jing huan xian zi an qian gua le hao."
2. zhong yao xin jian he yin shua pin fu you shi, you you ju deng ji bian hao,, gei shou ju. gua hao you jian ruo yi shi, you you ju fu ze zhui cha.
