掛冠歸里 [guà guān guī lǐ] [gua guan gui li]—
To describe resigning from office (辭官 [ci guan]) and retiring to live in seclusion (歸隱 [gui yin]).
Chapter Eight of The Scholars (儒林外史 [ru lin wai shi]): "We, your nephews (小姪們 [xiao zhi men]), in the capital (京 [jing]), heard that our esteemed uncle (姑丈 [gu zhang]) resigned from office (掛冠 [gua guan]) and returned to your hometown (歸里 [gui li]), and there is no one (無人 [wu ren]) who does not admire (拜服 [bai fu]) your brilliant decision (高見 [gao jian])."
掛冠歸里：形容辭官歸隱。《儒林外史》第八回：「小姪們在京，聞知姑丈掛冠歸里，無人不拜服高見。」
