故劍 [gù jiàn] [gu jian]—
When Emperor Xuan of Han (漢宣帝 [han xuan di]) was still a great-grandson of the emperor (皇曾孫 [huang ceng sun]), he married the daughter of Xu Guanghan (許廣漢女 [xu guang han nu]). After he ascended the throne (即位 [ji wei]), his ministers (眾臣 [zhong chen]) discussed establishing a new empress (皇后 [huang hou]). Emperor Xuan (宣帝 [xuan di]) then issued an imperial edict (詔 [zhao]) seeking his "old sword from humble times" (微時 [wei shi]), indicating his intention to establish his former wife (前妻 [qian qi]), the daughter of Xu (許女 [xu nu]), as empress (后 [hou]). See Book of Han (《漢書 [han shu]》), Volume 97 (卷九七 [juan jiu qi]), Biographies of Empresses and Consorts Part 1 (外戚傳上 [wai qi chuan shang]), Biography of Empress Xu of Emperor Xiao Xuan (孝宣許皇后傳 [xiao xuan xu huang hou chuan]). Later, "old sword" became a metaphor (比喻 [bi yu]) for a former wife (前妻 [qian qi]). In History of the Northern Dynasties (《北史 [bei shi]》), Volume 14 (卷一四 [juan yi si]), Biographies of Empresses and Consorts Part 2 (后妃傳下 [hou fei chuan xia]), Biography of Empress Min of Emperor Yang of Sui, Empress Xiao (隋煬愍皇后蕭氏傳 [sui yang min huang hou xiao shi chuan]): "Feeling the lingering favor (餘恩 [yu en]) of the past, she sought the 'old sword' at the imperial palace (宸極 [chen ji])." In Xuan Ding's (宣鼎 [xuan ding]) Qiu Liyu, the Leper Woman (《麻瘋女邱麗玉 [ma feng nu qiu li yu]》) from the Qing Dynasty (清 [qing]): "My humble daughter (小女 [xiao nu]) had a short life (命薄 [ming bao]) and passed away long ago! Does Your Excellency (明公 [ming gong]) still wish to seek the 'old sword'?"
