gri gu (གྲི་གུ) in Tibetan refers to the Sanskrit Kartikā—a “half-moon blade knife” (for skinning an animal and for scraping hides).—In the iconography of Chöd, the practitioner symbolically uses a kartikā to separate the body-mind from the mind-stream in ritual. Chöd (gcod) is a spiritual practice which means “cutting through the ego” and combines Prajñāpāramitā philosophy with specific meditation methods and Tantric ritual.
