Tibetan Buddhism (Vajrayana or tantric Buddhism)
gri gu (གྲི་གུ) in Tibetan refers to the Sanskrit Kartikā—a “half-moon blade knife” (for skinning an animal and for scraping hides).—In the iconography of Chöd, the practitioner symbolically uses a kartikā to separate the body-mind from the mind-stream in ritual. Chöd (gcod) is a spiritual practice which means “cutting through the ego” and combines Prajñāpāramitā philosophy with specific meditation methods and Tantric ritual. [...] Kartika [gri gu] imagery in Chöd rituals provides the practitioner with an opportunity to realize Buddhist doctrine. [...]

Tibetan Buddhism includes schools such as Nyingma, Kadampa, Kagyu and Gelug. Their primary canon of literature is divided in two broad categories: The Kangyur, which consists of Buddha’s words, and the Tengyur, which includes commentaries from various sources. Esotericism and tantra techniques (vajrayāna) are collected indepently.
