Gopinathpur refers to a significant "Sola Shasan" (sixteen Brahmin settlement) established in the Puri district of Odisha by King Gopinath Deva (reigned c. 1720–1725) of the Bhoi dynasty. As one of the later royal grants recorded in the Madala Panji and documented in the Orissa Review (December 2005), the village was founded to further strengthen the ecclesiastical infrastructure surrounding the Jagannath Temple. Situated near the Bhargavi River, the settlement was granted as Nishkara (tax-free) land to a community of Vedic scholars who were integrated into the Mukti Mandapa (the supreme religious assembly).
