根緣 [gen yuan]—Gēnyuán — [Term] Refers to the matters concerning a person's innate disposition (根性 [gen xing]) and circumstances (境遇 [jing yu]). Xuányì Fēnjì (玄義分記 [xuan yi fen ji]) Volume 3 states: "Due to differing root-conditions, regarding precepts (戒 [jie]), one is granted the Five, Eight, Ten, or Full Precepts, etc.; and regarding concentration (定 [ding]), one is taught practices such as contemplation (觀 [guan]), refinement (練 [lian]), and gradual cultivation (薰修 [xun xiu]), etc., to achieve concentration."

根緣—【術語】人之根性與境遇之緣務。玄義分記三曰:「根緣不同,就戒授五八十具等戒,就定教於觀練薰修等定。」

根由 [gen you] (gēnyóu): The cause, the ins and outs of a matter, the reason.
From Chapter 32 of 《水滸傳 [shui hu chuan]》 (Water Margin): "Interrogate and find out the (gēnyuán) of that fellow, then escort him to the 官司 [guan si] (official authorities) to be dealt with."
From Chapter 11 of 《老殘遊記 [lao can you ji]》 (The Travels of Lao Can): "To say there are no ghosts means one can disrespect one's 祖宗 [zu zong] (ancestors), which is the (gēnyuán) of his 家庭革命 [jia ting ge ming] (family revolution)."

From 《抱朴子 [bao pu zi].外篇 [wai pian].酒誡 [jiu jie]》 (Baopuzi: Outer Chapters: Admonitions on Wine): "Indulging the immediate desires of the heart and mouth (縱心口之近欲 [zong xin kou zhi jin yu]), lightly invites the root of disaster (召災 [zhao zai])."
From 唐 [tang] (Tang Dynasty) 杜甫 [du fu] (Du Fu)'s poem 〈火 [huo]〉 (Fire): "Countless springs (百泓 [bai hong]) boil and fall (羅落沸 [luo luo fei]), their roots are all from ancient times (萬古 [wan gu])."
2. The fundamental (根本 [gen ben]) basis (基礎 [ji chu]) of things (事物 [shi wu]).

In 《初刻拍案驚奇 [chu ke pai an jing qi]》 (Chū Kè Pāi'àn Jīngqí), Volume 12: "That 女子 [nu zi] (nǚzǐ) (woman) recounted the 事情 [shi qing] (shìqíng) (events) after their separation, how she went to 汴 [bian] (Biàn) (Bianjing) to search for a living, how her 盤纏 [pan chan] (pánchán) (travel expenses) ran out, and the 始末 [shi mo](shǐmò gēnyuán) (entire story from beginning to end, including the root cause) of her 失身為娼 [shi shen wei chang] (shīshēn wéi chāng) (losing her virtue and becoming a prostitute)."
