根敗 [gen bai]—根败 [gen bai] (gēn bài) — [A term] The five faculties (五根 [wu gen]), such as the eyes, are damaged and rendered unusable.
The Vimalakirti Sutra (维摩经 [wei mo jing]), Chapter on the Buddha's Path (佛道品 [fu dao pin]), states: "For example, just as a person with impaired faculties can no longer find enjoyment in the five desires (五欲 [wu yu]), similarly, those who hear about others severing defilements gain no further benefit from the Buddha's Dharma."
Huiyuan's Commentary (慧远疏 [hui yuan shu]) on the same sutra states: "'Eyes, etc.' are called 'faculties'; 'impairment of faculties' is called 'failure'; a person whose faculties are impaired is called a 'person with impaired faculties,' unable to perceive forms (色声 [se sheng]), sounds, etc."
