隔房 [gé fáng] [ge fang]—
1. Neighbor (鄰居 [lin ju]). For example: "He is my good neighbor."
2. To live separately (分開居住 [fen kai ju zhu]). From "Dream of the Red Chamber" (紅樓夢 [hong lou meng]), Chapter 21 (第二一回 [di er yi hui]): "On the one hand, she ordered Ping'er (平兒 [ping er]) to prepare bedding and clothes (鋪蓋衣服 [pu gai yi fu]) for Jia Lian (賈璉 [jia lian]) to live in a separate room; on the other hand, she took large pieces of red cloth (大紅尺頭 [da hong chi tou]) to tailor clothes for the wet nurses (奶子 [nai zi]) and maids (丫頭 [ya tou]) and other close attendants (親近人丁 [qin jin ren ding])."
