From Emperor Wu (武帝 [wu di]) of the Southern Dynasties (南朝 [nan chao]) Liang (梁 [liang]), "Edict on Renouncing Taoism and Serving Buddhism (敕舍道事佛文 [chi she dao shi fu wen])": "Laozi (老子 [lao zi]), Duke of Zhou (周公 [zhou gong]), Confucius (孔子 [kong zi]), etc., although they are disciples of the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]), their teachings (化 [hua]) are heterodox (邪 [xie]) and are merely worldly (世間 [shi jian]) good (善 [shan]); they cannot cast off the mortal (革凡 [ge fan]) and become a sage/saint (成聖 [cheng sheng])."
