Just as the Ganga flows to the east, slides to the east, and tends to the east, even so, a monk who cultivates the bojjhangas (S.v.135, 137), the satipatthanas (196), the indriyas (239, 241), the padhanas (244), the balas 249, 251), the iddhi padas (290), and the jhanas (307), slides and tends towards nibbana.
Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
