Gaṇamūrti (गणमूर्ति) refers to a class of images, discussed in the Saudhikāgama: an unpublished Sanskrit text of encyclopaedic nature on Orissan temple architecture, town planning and iconography comprising about 4457 verses divided into nine chapters.—In the fourth chapter he expounds the Gaṇapatipratimā-lakṣaṇa. Chapter five is devoted to the explanation of the Śaivapratimā-lakṣaṇa, nṛtyamūrtis and bhairavamūrtis, chapter six to Viṣṇupratimā-lakṣaṇa, and chapter seven to Sūryarahasya. Chapter eight concerns the Śaktirahasya (i.e., the Navadurgārahasya, Daśamahāvidyārahasya and Saptamātṛkārahasya) and their pañjaras. The last chapter consists of a description of the gaṇamūrtis.
Shilpashastra (शिल्पशास्त्र, śilpaśāstra) represents the ancient Indian science (shastra) of creative arts (shilpa) such as sculpture, iconography and painting. Closely related to Vastushastra (architecture), they often share the same literature.
