旰食宵衣 [gàn shí xiāo yī] [gan shi xiao yi]—
Eating only late in the day, and getting up to dress before dawn. It is a metaphor for being diligent and busy. From Chen Hong's (陳鴻 [chen hong]) "The Tale of Everlasting Sorrow" (長恨傳 [zhang hen chuan]) from the Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]): "Emperor Xuanzong (玄宗 [xuan zong]) had been on the throne for a long time, and grew weary of his diligent and arduous work, which involved eating late and dressing at dawn." Also written as "宵衣旰食 [xiao yi gan shi]" and "昃食宵衣 [ze shi xiao yi]".
旰食宵衣:天晚了才進食,天未亮即起床穿衣。比喻勤勞忙碌。唐.陳鴻《長恨傳》:「玄宗在位歲久,倦於旰食宵衣。」也作「宵衣旰食」、「昃食宵衣」。
