甘瓜苦蒂 [gān guā kǔ dì] [gan gua ku di]—
Melons and fruits (瓜果 [gua guo]) are sweet and delicious, but their stems (瓜蒂 [gua di]) taste bitter, which is a metaphor for the impossibility of anything being perfect (十全十美 [shi quan shi mei]). "Commonplace Notes - Plants and Trees" (《通俗編 [tong su bian].草木 [cao mu]》) states: "'Elegance of the Classics' (《埤雅 [pi ya]》) quotes 'Mozi' (《墨子 [mo zi]》): 'Sweet melons (甘瓜 [gan gua]) have bitter stems (苦蒂 [ku di]), there is nothing perfect (無全美 [wu quan mei]) in the world (天下 [tian xia]).'" It is also written as "sweet melon embracing bitter stem" (甘瓜抱苦蒂 [gan gua bao ku di]).
