干 [gan] (gān) is a phonetic loan character (假借字 [jia jie zi]) for 幹 [gan] (gàn). (gān dāi) refers to doing foolish things (做傻事 [zuo sha shi]). In Chapter Four (第四回 [di si hui]) of Water Margin (水滸傳 [shui hu chuan]): "How foolish of me! If I had known earlier about this place (去处 [qu chu]), I wouldn't have snatched that barrel of wine from him to drink, but would have come down myself to buy some to drink."

干呆:干是幹的假借字。「干呆」指做傻事。《水滸傳》第四回:「干呆麼!俺早知有這個去處,不奪他那桶酒吃,也自下來買些吃。」

From "Records of the Three Kingdoms" (《三國志 [san guo zhi]》), Volume 56, "Book of Wu" (《吳書 [wu shu]》), "Biography of Zhu Huan" (《朱桓傳 [zhu huan chuan]》): "When a plague (疫癘 [yi li]) was encountered and grain and food (穀食 [gu shi]) became scarce and expensive, Huan (桓 [huan]) assigned capable officials (良吏 [liang li]), personally supervised medical care (醫藥 [yi yao]), and continuously provided meals and porridge (飱粥 [sun zhou]). The officials and common people (士民 [shi min]) were deeply grateful to him."
