gāṃvaī (गांवई).—f (gāṃva) Abandoning the village and taking up residence in another: also any other open form of refusal or resistance to orders issued or terms proposed by the Government-officer. A practice of the peasantry, sometimes of the whole population of a village, when Government oppresses them. Adopted in order to extort reparation, remission, or forbearance.
