改轅易轍 [gǎi yuán yì zhé] [gai yuan yi zhe]—
Change the direction and path of a vehicle's travel (改變行車的方向與路徑 [gai bian xing che de fang xiang yu lu jing]). It is an analogy for changing methods or attitudes (比喻改變方法或態度 [bi yu gai bian fang fa huo tai du]). From Wèi Qìngzhī (魏慶之 [wei qing zhi])'s Shīrén Yùxiè (詩人玉屑 [shi ren yu xie]), Volume 18, Zhāng Qín (張秦 [zhang qin]), Song (宋 [song]) Dynasty: "Mr. Dōngpō (東坡先生 [dong po xian sheng]) believed that Lǔzhí (魯直 [lu zhi]) should be considered the foremost poet of that generation. The two gentlemen then abandoned the old and sought the new (捨舊而圖新 [she jiu er tu xin]). Initially, their change of course was like withered strings and worn-out pegs (枯絃敝軫 [ku xian bi zhen])."
