Gāndharvavivāha (गान्धर्वविवाह):—The Gāndharva marriage (vivāha).—This is a marriage arising out of the voluntary union of a maiden or her lover which springs from desire and has sexual intercourse for its purpose. It can be compared with the modern love marriage.

Gandharvavivāha (गन्धर्वविवाह).—one of the eight forms of marriage described in Manusmṛti 3.27 &c.; in this form marriage proceeds entirely from love or the mutual inclination of a youth and maiden without ceremonies and without consulting relatives; it is, as Kālidāsa observes, कथमप्यबान्धवकृता स्नेहप्रवृत्तिः (kathamapyabāndhavakṛtā snehapravṛttiḥ) Ś.4.17.
