扶乩 [fú jī] [fu ji]—
A folk method (民間方法 [min jian fang fa]) for consulting deities (請示神明 [qing shi shen ming]). A T-shaped wooden stick (丁字形木棍 [ding zi xing mu gun]) is placed on a sand tray (沙盤 [sha pan]), and two people support the frame (扶著架子 [fu zhe jia zi]). Following the ritual to invite a deity (依法請神 [yi fa qing shen]), the wooden stick (木棍 [mu gun]) draws characters (畫出文字 [hua chu wen zi]) on the sand tray (沙盤 [sha pan]) as a revelation (啟示 [qi shi]) from the deity (神明 [shen ming]), indicating good or ill fortune (吉凶 [ji xiong]). In Chapter 10 of The Scholars (《儒林外史 [ru lin wai shi]》), it states: "As for inviting immortals to judge matters (請仙判事 [qing xian pan shi]) and spirit writing (筆籙 [bi lu]), this junior (晚生 [wan sheng]) knows a little about them (略知一二 [lue zhi yi er])." Good fortune (福祿 [fu lu]) and auspiciousness (吉祥 [ji xiang]). 腹肌 [fù jī] [fu ji]—
