Source: Google Books: The Crystal Mirror of Philosophical SystemsThe Four Preparations refers to the “preliminary practices for Tantra” and are known in Tibetan as sngon 'gro sbyor ba bzhi.—Accordingly, [while describing the early Kagyü arrangements of Mahāmudrā], [regarding the yoga of the co-emergent]: [...] It also is said: “Mind itself is co-emergent with the dharmakāya; Conceptual thoughts are the co-emergent waves of the dharmakāya; Appearances are the co-emergent light of the dharmakāya. Appearances and mind are inseparably co-emergent”.—The meaning of the statement is explained as threefold: in light of an emphasis on devotion and disgust, there is (1) the preliminary, that is, the four preparations, (2) the actual, that is, the two-aspected identification, and (3) the follow-up, that is, inner experience in relation to appearing objects. Of these, the preliminary is the same as usual; the two aspects of the actual are tranquil abiding and superior insight.
The Four Preparations are:
- Prostration,
- Vajrasattva purification meditation,
- Guru Yoga,
- Mandala offerings.

Tibetan Buddhism includes schools such as Nyingma, Kadampa, Kagyu and Gelug. Their primary canon of literature is divided in two broad categories: The Kangyur, which consists of Buddha’s words, and the Tengyur, which includes commentaries from various sources. Esotericism and tantra techniques (vajrayāna) are collected indepently.
